Royksopp and their SL MkII's
Royksopp are Norwegian electronic music duo Torbjorn Brundtland and Svein Berge who formed in 1998 after meeting at school and found international acclaim with their debut titled album Melody A.M, released on Wall of Sound in 2001.
The success of Melody AM brought them led to a number of tracks been signed for media adverts and console games with “Eple” most notably been used by Apple as the start up video to Mac OSX 1.3.
Royksopp’s third studio album Junior was released this year in March 09. We caught up with Gavin Ellis (head engineer) to discuss how they are using their Novation gear live during a busy international touring schedule.
What festivals have you been doing this summer?
Royksopp have played festivals all over Europe this summer. We headlined Melt recently in Germany and just did Get Loaded in London. Plus we’ve got tour dates in Korea, UK & US coming up.
Why did Royksopp choose Novation keyboards?
We decided to go with Novation controllers because the brand has a solid reputation plus the new controllers looked like they had plenty of midi control options to use in a live performance environment.
How do Royksopp use the SL's in the Live Setup?
Royksopp travel with 3 SL’s and we use 2 on stage plus 1 for backup. Svein and Torbjorn each have an SL hooked up to a Muse Receptor, which control various VST’s. The Novations are used to trigger loads of sound effects, samples and synth sounds live.
What improvements do you like on the new MKII versions?
The SL’s are great to program and provide enough controller options for mapping various software parameters. The large LED screen, buttons and ringed encoders make it much easier in low light environments for Royksopp to use on stage, giving them visual feedback, especially when used for filter sweeps and triggering sound effects or samples.
